Meet The Meck Dec

Updated: Dec 7, 2020

Sourced from the Mecklenburg Historical Society, this document declares independence specifically by and for Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

More widely understood in the region, the existence of this document came as a complete surprise to me. Perhaps as a kindness, I was also gently told that the reason for this level of specificity at the time is unknown.

Charlotte Museum of History opened its grounds to the public for a day to visit and explore the natural beauty of the place. According to pandemic practices, the main building was not available for tourists. This visitor will happily return for the larger experience at some future date.

The owner of this stunningly beautiful property.....

appropriately socially distanced and masked....welcomes his guests.

I was able to view the stone house inside and out, along with the separate kitchen structure and kitchen garden. This was a prosperous household of the era.

Colonial kitchens were typically separate from the home, primarily due to risks associated with cooking- especially fires.

Also remaining on property is the simple but vitally important Spring House, serving as the source of clean water for the property.

With thanks to my gracious and articulate host, pictured holding the Meck Dec!
