Millions of visitors pass through Charlotte, North Carolina, travelling west en route to the High Country. Charlotte itself is an interesting, vibrant city and the High Country is a spectacular destination 120 miles to the West. The drive, assuming usual traffic, takes about two and a half hours, allowing ample time to venture off the highway and stop along the way.
First stop: The City of Belmont
Belmont, North Carolina is a treasure tucked away in Gaston County, just over county line from Charlotte/Mecklenberg County and fifteen minutes from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Charm abounds in Belmont’s downtown and on the historic campus of Belmont Abbey College. Once you reach Belmont, you’ll begin to feel a world away from the big city!
Belmont Abbey is the spot where faith-based acculturated academics meet natural beauty, and a warm welcome. The Abbey itself was founded by Benedictine Monks in 1876 and the campus is on the National Register of Historic Places. Fast forward to the present and you will find a nationally ranked college graduating scores of knowledgeable and ethics-equipped alumni every May. Belmont is just off the Interstate 85, Exit 27 en route to the High Country, about two hours away.
While you’re in town…
Take North Main Street to Belmont’s charming downtown of shops and eateries located on The Carolina Thread Trail. Not to be missed is Nellie’s Southern Kitchen (proprietors are among the famed Jonas family, but do not expect a serenade from the brothers who are likely on their own tour), String Bean, with its amazing collection of wines, as evidenced by Wine Spectator accolades on display, and Cherubs Café, an entrepreneurial fan favorite operated under the auspices of nonprofit organization Holy Angels. Belmont also offers a collection of breweries to enjoy once you’ve reached your destination. A walk down Main Street will have you stopping in the many cool shops, eateries, snack options and movie set surroundings. Right around the corner you’ll encounter more historic buildings, now home to pubs. Find a shady spot at Stowe Park to inventory your treats and treasures.
Fun fact: If you decide to overnight in the area, notice the local Hampton Inn, whose exterior reflects the Benedictine architectural vibe. You’ll also notice that façade at Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, Loftin Apartments and Home One #belmontnc #montcrosschamberofcommerce #gogaston #downtownbelmont
